News: Local actor welcomes onstage identity crisis
Tuesday, April 29. 2008
WJT artistic director Michael Nathanson has a parable that explains the theatrical pecking order for actors in Winnipeg.
"There are three friends on a date," says Nathanson. "The first friend is really good-looking, really funny, really smart and everybody wants to be with them. That's the Manitoba Theatre Centre."
The next friend is good-looking, smart and funny and everybody is happy to be with them. That describes Prairie Theatre Exchange, he says.
"Then there's the friend that puts out, and that's WJT," Nathanson says with a chuckle. "People are happy to be with us, but if the first two friends show interest, it's bye-bye."

Reviews: Playwright's Talk has plenty to say
Friday, October 12. 2007
Th day planes plowed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, Michael Nathanson had planned to be nearby at city hall for his civil wedding.
The former Winnipegger and his bride Rebecca Brask had been married the month before in Manitoba and wanted to tie the knot again stateside to jump-start her quest for immigration papers that would allow her to live in the United States. Convinced there were more deadly attacks to come, the pair fled New York within a week.
"We just thought the planes were window dressing for the real tragedy to come," recalls Nathanson, a playwriting product of the University of Winnipeg.
In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, Nathanson received an e-mail from one of his pals in Italy loaded with anti-American and anti-Israel diatribes.
